What Can and Can’t Go in a Dumpster? A Virginia Homeowner’s Guide

What Can and Can’t Go in a Dumpster? A Virginia Homeowner’s Guide

Whether you’re cleaning out your garage, remodeling your kitchen, downsizing, or tackling a landscaping project, renting a dumpster is one of the easiest ways to keep your project organized. One of the first questions homeowners ask is:

“What can I actually put in the dumpster?”

The good news is that most everyday household debris, renovation materials, and yard waste are perfectly acceptable. Understanding what is—and isn’t—allowed before your dumpster arrives will help you avoid delays, additional disposal fees, and unexpected surprises.

Materials You Can Dispose Of

Most non-hazardous materials generated during residential projects can safely be placed inside one of our dump trailers, including:

  • Furniture
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Household items
  • Clothing
  • Toys
  • Lumber
  • Drywall
  • Cabinets
  • Flooring
  • Roofing materials
  • Yard debris including branches, brush and leaves
  • Small amounts of concrete, brick or dirt (please let us know beforehand, as weight restrictions apply)

Whether you’re renovating a bathroom, cleaning out an estate, preparing for a move, or simply reclaiming your garage, these materials are typically accepted.

Materials That Cannot Go in a Dumpster

To comply with Virginia environmental regulations and landfill requirements, certain materials require special handling and cannot be placed in a dumpster.

These include:

  • Paint, stains and solvents (unless completely dried)
  • Motor oil and automotive fluids
  • Gasoline and fuels
  • Propane tanks
  • Tires
  • Vehicle batteries
  • Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners containing refrigerant
  • Large appliances
  • Hazardous chemicals
  • Medical waste and sharps
  • Ammunition, fireworks and explosives

These items require specialized disposal and should never be mixed with standard debris.

Not Sure About an Item?

If you’re unsure whether something can go into the dumpster, simply ask.

Many prohibited items can still be removed through our specialty disposal services for an additional fee. We’ll explain your options, help you remain compliant with Virginia disposal regulations, and make sure your project stays on schedule.
